ImageKit provides a powerful browser-based image editor that allows you to edit images directly inside the DAM. You can resize, crop, rotate, and add frames, text overlays, and image overlays with the help of stickers. You can also remove the background from images with AI.
Apart from these UI-based editors, you can use any of the 50+ real-time image transformations in the image URL and use them directly on your website and app.
ImageKit Editor
The ImageKit Editor is the newest way to edit images in your Media Library. It provides a browser-based interface for visually applying ImageKit transformations, without needing to manually construct transformation URLs.
How to Access
You can open the editor either from the right-click menu or the action bar. Right-click on any supported image file (JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF) and select “ImageKit Editor”, or select one or more images and choose the “ImageKit Editor” option in the header toolbar. The editor then opens in a modal window with the selected images preloaded.
Editing Workflow
When you launch the editor from the Media Library, your chosen images appear directly in the interface. From there, you can apply transformations such as resizing, cropping, focus, or quality adjustments. As you make changes, the preview updates instantly in the editor, reflecting the exact ImageKit transformation parameters that power the URL-based system. You can combine multiple transformations—for example, crop, resize, and quality adjustments—to refine your image until it looks exactly the way you need.
Once the transformations are applied, you can decide how to use the results. The editor allows you to copy the transformed URL for immediate use in your website or app, download the edited image directly, bulk download multiple images together as a ZIP file, or export a CSV containing the list of transformed URLs. Your original file always remains safe in the Media Library.
The editor simply generates transformation URLs in the browser, giving you a visual editing workflow that translates seamlessly into ready-to-use ImageKit links (for example, tr=w-400,h-300,q-80
).
The ImageKit Editor can also be integrated into your own CMS or app. See the GitHub repository for details.
Built-in image editor (Legacy)
Right-click any image file in the Media Library and select the "Edit image" option.
AI-powered background removal
Right-click any image file in the Media Library and select the "Remove background" option. The AI-powered background removal tool will automatically remove the background from the image in a few seconds. Once the background is removed, a new version will be added under the same image, becoming the current version. The original image before background removal can be accessed from the version dropdown at the top of the asset detail page
Custom focus area
ImageKit's real-time image manipulation allows you to resize and crop images. While cropping, you can control which part of the image is centered. Media Library allows you to define a focus area on the uploaded image files and crop around it using the fo-custom
URL parameter.
Right-click any image file in the Media Library and select the "Custom Focus Area" option. Resize and place the rectangle correctly on the image to define the focus area.
